I have written several times about Evernote (see for a list of my past articles about Evernote). I use Evernote more often than I use a genealogy program although I have to also add that I use Evernote for all sorts of things, not just for genealogy purposes. However, the producers of Evernote recently increased the price of the program and also reduced the capabilities of the free version. A number of Evernote users have now switched, or are contemplating switching, to other note-taking applications.
Probably the second-most popular note-taking application is Microsoft’s OneNote. While more complicated to use, OneNote has a great price: FREE. See Microsoft’s Office Blog at for details. OneNote is easily the most feature-rich alternative to Evernote, so it makes the most sense if you love Evernote, but don’t like the new price plans.
However, copying hundreds, or even thousands, of notes from one program to the other can be tedious. Unfortunately, the only way to import your notes from Evernote into OneNote was through a Windows-only tool.

Now that tool is available for the Macintosh. The import tool will pull over all your notes and notebooks and try to organize them as best as it can. It’s a pretty self-explanatory process, but you’ll find the guide for using the tool and the download link over at Microsoft at. By the way, I am sticking with Evernote. Despite the higher price, I find Evernote is easier to use than OneNote. I’ll pay the modest new price.
